Story by Scot Sweet / PCBL Staff Writer

This was the second game of our weekend All-Star triple-header at beautiful Matador Stadium on the campus of Cal State Northridge. This second day of All-Star action brought with it a second day of expected heat; with temps already rising for the early game of today’s All-Star twin bill.  With that being said, let’s heat things up with some PCBL All-Star action!

With the East squad failing to score in the top half of the 1st inning, the West would come up to try and draw first blood in this All-Star contest. The West leads off the bottom of the inning with the Osos’ Adrian Rizzo. He doubles to start the West rally. He is followed by Osos teammate Chuy Lopez who singles to score Rizzo from 2nd. The West settle for the single run in the inning to take the early 1-0 lead.

The score would remain 1-0 West as we entered the top of the 3rd inning. The East All-Stars leadoff with Emilio Becarra of the Woodys’, who is hit by a pitch. He is followed by the Royals’ Matt Graham who triples home Becarra. The East settle for the single run in the top of the 3rd inning to tie this All-Star contest at 1 apiece.

The West would come up in the bottom of the 4th inning with the score still tied, 1-1. Chuy Lopez drew a 1-out walk to put 1 on and 1 out for Danny Rizo who singled. A pass ball would advance the runners to 2nd and 3rd. The Osos’ Jonathan Caceres followed with an RBI single. The Sharks’ Jason King would reach base due to a fielding error, with another run scoring on the play. Jonathan Caceres stole home to score a run. The Breakers’ Danny Bazil hit an RBI single. The West squad comes up with 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to take a 5-1 lead.

forWoody’s Jose “Chicken” Gallegos. They add another run in the 6th inning when the Expos Vincent Mastrangelo doubles and is followed by the Tribe’s Law Crone who hita an RBI single.

The West come up in the bottom of the 7th inning holding a narrow 5-3 lead. Jonathan Caceres leads off the inning with a single. The next batter strikes out; sending up Danny Bazil who draws a walk. With 2 out and 2 on, the Royals’ Tony Evangelista hits an RBI double. The next batter is the Dodgers’ Stephen Ohayon; who grounds out but gets an RBI as a run scores on the play. The West add 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to increase their lead; now leading 7-3.

The West come up in the bottom of the 8th; still maintaining the 7-3 lead. With 2 out in the inning, the Sharks’ Matt Hansen doubles to keep the inning alive.  Sharks’ teammate John Wood walks to put 2 on and 2 out for Adrian Rizo who reaches base due to a fielding error. The next batter is Chuy Lopez. He hits an RBI single. Danny Rizo follows by reaching base on a fielding error. Jonathan Caceres is hit by a pitch. Jason King answers with a double. When all is said and done in the inning; 5 runs cross the plate and the West now have a commanding 12-3 lead going into the top of the 9th inning.

The East All-Stars had seen enough at this point; going down in order in the top of the 9th to hand this All-Star victory over to the West squad. Congratulations to the West All-Stars for responding late in this game to seal the victory.
